Our collection of Peterson pipes, a brief story of Ireland La Pipe Rit

If you’re not familiar, many Peterson Pipes are made with the Peterson system, a proprietary method of construction. Basically, instead of a hole that goes straight through the shank from the mouthpiece to the bowl, there’s a reservoir where the shank and bowl meet to collect moisture. The system is meant to collect condensation away from the draft hole for a drier smoke. You might like this if you’ve ever experienced a gurgle while smoking your pipe, since the system would eliminate that.Check the Peterson Pipes site for a more detailed description.

The pipe tobacco made by Peterson is by no means a mass-produced product. The danish Pipetobacco-producer „Scandinavian Tobacco Group“ has been manufacturing pipe tobacco for a number of years. However, the tried and tested traditional recipes have been retained. As before, only exquisite ingredients are used, so that fans of classically pure pipe tobacco and lovers of flavored varieties get their money’s worth.

As the oldest continuously operating briar pipe factory in the world, we at Peterson have a certain tradition to uphold, a legacy of craftsmanship dating back over peterson pipes 150 years. Whether you’re browsing for your very first pipe or are a seasoned collector in search of a rare gem, know that every pipe in our catalogue carries with it that same preservation of tradition. A Peterson pipe isn’t just a utilitarian tool; it’s a piece of history you can carry with you in your travels, a faithful companion to accompany you through all that life offers. Again this year you have set us an interesting and ‘thought provoking’ task to commemorate System Day. What follows is my contribution along with a photo of my System 314 from the early 1980s. The 309 standard is perhaps the best smoking pipe I’ve had right out of the box.

It has a metal wind cap over a rim cap as well as a shank cap and ferrule to hold the carved Cherry wood stem with a horn end, flexible hose portion and horn stem. It is dirty and scratched but every kilometer of its journey can be seen in the bowl and shank of the pipe. The stem has a horn end and horn mouth piece with a flexible hose portion in the middle that is in quite good condition. The photos below show the pipe from a variety of angles and close up views.

I went with the 302 since it’s a slightly larger bowl for longer smokes. The ordering process was simple and even came with a gift wrap option. It was back in London 1865 where two brothers George and Frederick Kapp started a pipe making business. In 1874 Fedrick moved to Dublin in pursue of his pipe making dream. Supply of meer from East Africa run out (Kenya / Tanzania exhausted, Somalia inaccessible), and thus the last Laxey meers were supplied to trade in May, 2001. Laxey Pipe Ltd. tried to survive continuing with briar pipes – mainly in the Danish style -, but to no success.

I have no idea how many pipes we bought on those visits as well as to the antique shop of his daughter. When we heard that it was Gene’s personal collection that was for sale and that he had passed away we decided for Jeff to go to the house and have a look. He went on January 25, 2024 to scope it out as we had seen his personal collection of pipes and there were definitely some among those well smoked old warriors that would be great to pick up. Perhaps there would even be one that could join my own collection in memory of Gene. Our Peterson video will go a long way to highlight the standards that Peterson holds itself to when crafting its pipes. Why not take a look at our selection and get yourself a  few masterfully made smoking pipes.

A while back I received a small box of pipes from a fellow pipeman who wanted to donate them to support  the non-profit organization I work for – the SA Foundation (). The organization has been providing long term recovery, housing and job training for women who have escaped sexual exploitation and trafficking. For over thirty years the work has gone on and thousands of young women and their children have been empowered to start over with skills and options.
