Tobacco Smoking: Peterson Pipes

I wanted to be able to interpret the hallmarks on the silver band. I have captured a portion of the chart that include below that helps to clarify the meaning of each of the three hallmarks. I like the Hallmark feature on the higher end Peterson pipes with Sterling silver bands.

The first one is the patented “Peterson System”, a deep reservoir that cools down and softens the smoke. This system is peculiar to bent pipes, and makes them even more enjoyeable. The second revolution Peterson brought to the pipe industry was the “P-Lip”, a stem that directs smoke towards the palate insted of the tongue.

I turned to “The Peterson Pipe” by Mark Irwin and Gary Malmberg to get some background on the Peterson’s Of Dublin pipes. Furthermore Laxey Pipe Ltd. manufactured the meer bowls for Peterson, Barling, Nørding and others from the later 1960’s until 2001. The bowls usually showed no nomenclature indicating the orderer. Often, just the stems were different, while bowls were the same.

On our online store, you will find a large choice of Peterson pipes, including the traditional lines Sherlock Holmes, Standard, Aran, Deluxe, Saint-Patrick, Tyrone… One of Peterson’s most notable contributions to pipe chacom tobacco pipes design is the “Dry System” pipe, patented in 1894. This design features a small reservoir to collect moisture, providing a drier and cooler smoke1. Each pipe has been lovingly crafted with a blend of tradition and innovation, offering a unique smoking experience for both collectors and enthusiasts alike.

A few years later the P-Lip, the unique Peterson mouthpiece, appears. With both the company has achieved many successes and prizes. This characterizes the company, which continues to make the same models. Peterson is also known for the beautiful silver applications. I have included a larger screen capture of the section on the third column of the chart in the photo below. The Peterson Pipe legend began in 1865 when the Kapp brothers of Nurnberg opened an elegant tobacconist shop on Grafton Street, Dublin.

Many thanks to everyonewho participated in this year’s System Day Event,as well as to the women and men who make and marketthe Peterson System Pipe. I enjoy working shortwave, using Morse code, and leisurely smoking my pipe. Tom Palmer has made it abundantly clear over the years that there is a delicate balance between art and commodity when it comes to choosing a smoking pipe.
