The Eurmax Standard 10×10 is very functional, followed closely by the E-Z Up Pyramid, Clam Outdoors Quick-Set Escape, and Eureka Tagalong Shelter. All four of these models maximize space and offer several features that make them very livable. The Quick-Set Escape offers a massive, fully enclosed living space, and the Eureka Tagalong dons extra pockets, hooks, and attached sandbags.
GCI Outdoor makes several rocking chairs, and we plan to try more of them to see if they’re any better than the Freestyle Rocker, which we weren’t enthusiastic about. Compared with cheaper chairs of its kind (like those from Walmart), the REI Co-op chair functions better and will last much longer. We like this durable, well-constructed chair that has a frame that makes you confident to sit. As fate would have it, traffic was later routed north of that downtown stretch to Route 66’s current location. Past Kellyville, Bristow and Depew, you’ll come to Stroud, which is one of only two Oklahoma locations with an original Ozark Trail obelisk. Obelisks are tall, four-sided, narrow structures topped with a pyramid-shaped stone.
The Coleman Cooler Quad has been our pick since 2016, through numerous camping trips and several testing sessions. “These are fantastic chairs. Padded seat is super comfortable,” raved one shopper. “They fold up flat and are easy to carry. Much nicer than sling chairs, and easier to get in and out. They are perfect for watching high school sports and camping.” Our hands-down winner in this category is the Eurmax Standard 10×10.
Testers consistently ranked this chair as one of the most comfortable models (typically second to the Yeti Trailhead, which costs almost four times as much). The few testers who didn’t like it often preferred the Kijaro Dual Lock XXL Chair, which costs a little bit more but provides a roomier seat. There’s also a mesh pocket behind the backrest, to hold things you don’t need to access quickly. This chair comes with a sturdy carrying case, with an over-the-shoulder strap, and it’s simple to expand and fold up accordion-style. Several Wirecutter staffers have owned the Coleman chair for years, using it on camping trips, in backyards, and at sporting events. For the most part, it’s held up well, but one common quibble is that the seat bottom begins to sag after several years of use.
The Eureka Tagalong scored slightly lower but still boasted an impressive score. It sits lower than cathedral-style canopies, which more effectively blocks the sun’s rays as their angles change during the day. Its weather-taped seams and waterproof canopy also create an excellent barrier against rain. It doesn’t perform as well when it is breezy outside, though. As for the Caravan V-Series, we feel it provides excellent coverage from the sun. However, its thinner frame rocks a bit during wind gusts, and it doesn’t have weather-taped seams, so it tends to leak a little during heavier rain storms.
The center trusses on the Eurmax hang lower than we would prefer, limiting the available headspace, but this is our only caveat. The Tagalong sits a little low and isn’t adjustable, which affects the user’s ability to alter the canopy’s height or angles as the sun’s rays change. Still, the lightweight and portable design makes up for this, especially in the right use cases.
Fortunately, this is also easy to remedy via DIY engineering. Buy a mesh bag for storage, attach a D-Ring, and clamp it onto one of the chair’s support struts. Suppose you think you may be in a position where you’ll spend several hours in this chair. However, it is marginally above average in terms of comfort compared to other camp chairs. Owing to its extra-wide seat, the first thing you’ll notice about this oversized director’s chair is that it looks rugged and robust. The Ozark Trail XXL Director chair’s metal frame also has an all-business look about it too, which clearly sends the message that this is a go-anywhere chair.
If your budget is tight, the Pacific Breeze Easy Up is an inexpensive beach canopy that provides the essentials for a quick, hassle-free setup but may not be built to endure many summers of use. If you can spend a bit more and want a more traditional ozark trail chair cathedral shape, the Caravan V-Series is a good choice. We are also very impressed with the overall value the Coleman 10×10 Sun Shelter brings to the table. It’s slightly more expensive than the cheapest options on our list. Still, we feel its price point is nearly perfect considering its quality and performance, specifically its extra features and beefier design.
Your only color options are red or blue, both with black trim. It’s more affordable than other chairs we tested of similar quality. Most other chairs in its price range don’t match its quality, features, or reputation.
